Tips for Choosing the Best Car Window Tint Percentage

April 26, 20254 min read

Did you know that car window tinting can be more than just a cosmetic upgrade meant to make your car stand out? In fact, having your car’s windows tinted can be a great way to help you drive.

Window tints with high visible light transmission (VLT) block less light from entering the cabin and reduce heat buildup, which is especially beneficial in hot weather. This means that tinted windows are a great choice for people who live in places with hot summers or who drive through dense forests often.

But with so many vehicle window tinting options available and plenty of cars coming with factory tint, how do you know which one is right for you?

Here are some valuable tips for choosing the perfect window tint percentage for your ride to help you find the best window tint that suits your needs and preferences.

Check the window film’s UV protection and visible light transmission ratings.

If you want to go beyond aesthetics and take advantage of the added protection it can give you, make sure that the car window tint film you choose is suitable for your climate.

The most important thing to look for when buying car window film is its UV protection rating. The visible light transmission (VLT) rating indicates how much light can pass through the film.

If you want to retain your privacy but still enjoy plenty of light inside your vehicle, car window tints with a VLT of 35–40% are perhaps your best bet. If you want your car to be in complete darkness, especially at night, then look for a VLT of 5–20%.

That said, try and choose a film that blocks out harmful UV rays and has a high VLT rating. This will help protect you and your loved ones from skin damage, eye fatigue, and your car’s interior from UV ray damage.

Don’t Be Fooled by Only Looking at the Color of the Film.

Just like with any other tinted product, it’s easy to get carried away by only looking at the color of the tint and not what percentage it is. You should, instead, focus on the film’s VLT and UV protection.

Some people choose darker tints to keep their privacy, while others choose lighter tints to let more light into their cars.

You can also consider the time of day you often drive the car. If you use your car to commute during rush hour, you might want a darker tint to prevent the sun from reflecting off your windows and blinding other drivers. If you drive at night, tinting your windows would prevent you from seeing other cars or obstacles on the road.

Find out what types of films are used and their quality.

Before settling on the perfect percentage of window tint you want for your car, you should also check if there’s a type of film designed for it. Different types of films are available on the market, so you’re bound to find one that suits your needs and preferences.

One of the most common types of car window tint is dyed film tint. This is usually applied to the top of the window. Dyed film is made from polyester, making it relatively affordable.

Another type of film you can choose is the metal-coated tint. This film is becoming increasingly popular because it’s one of the most durable types of tint and is also very easy to clean and maintain.

But if you want your car to be in complete darkness, you might want to consider using limousine-grade window tint.

The most significant difference between a limousine and regular car window tint is that limousine tint is a much thicker, heavy-duty film with a high VLT of around 5% to 20%. This is convenient for blocking light on the limousine’s windows and providing passengers privacy while inside.
